What Is a Sitzmark?
A sitzmark is the imprint left in the snow when someone falls backward while skiing.
The word comes from German: Sitzen = "to sit" and Mark = "mark"
Put together, it literally means "sit mark."
Years ago, ski areas even posted signs reminding guests to fill in their sitzmarks after a fall because those frozen dents could become hazards for other skiers on the slope!
